Patient journey, step 01

Why people come here, in their own words

Most people arrive with a question rather than a diagnosis: something has changed, a relative received bad news, or a routine check produced a number nobody explained. This page describes the reasons patients give, and the situations where a different service is the right one.

01

What reasons do people give?

Four recur. Something has changed and no test explains it: energy, sleep, recovery or concentration. A family member has been diagnosed, and the question becomes personal risk. A routine check produced a value that was reported as borderline and left there. Or nothing at all is wrong, and the person simply wants a measured baseline while there is still time for a measurement to be useful.

All four are reasonable reasons to book a conversation. None of them requires you to know in advance what should be tested.

02

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis first?

No. The first step is a conversation in which your history, your current symptoms and your questions are reviewed, and a physician decides with you whether any measurement is justified at all. Sometimes the answer is that nothing needs to be done, and that answer is given plainly.

If you already have a treating physician, their work continues. Nothing described here replaces the care of your own doctor, and reports can be shared with them at your request.

03

When is this not the right service?

In an emergency, call 112. If you have an acute symptom that needs attention today, chest pain, breathlessness, sudden neurological change, go to an emergency department rather than book an assessment.

This is also not the right service if you are looking for a fixed programme with a promised outcome, or for a therapy chosen in advance from a list. Work here starts from measurement and from a documented reason.

04

What happens after the first conversation?

You receive a written, individual explanation of what is proposed for you and why, including the cost, as described on the fees page. You decide afterwards, not during the conversation. The sequence that follows is set out on the what to expect page, and the assessment structure on the approach page.

05

No result is promised

No result is promised. The relationship between physician and patient is an obligation of means, not of result. Individual results vary. Before anything is prescribed, your physician states the evidence level for that specific intervention in your case, and records it.
